Grab Bars

Grab bars are essential for safety in and around the tub or shower. Screw in grab bars are the most secure and are inexpensive, but are often not practical. Suction grab bars are simple to mount, and don’t do any damage to the tile or other surface, as they do not require drilling. A suction grab bar attaches to the mounting surface using the power of suction alone. They work surprisingly well. A suction grab bar can be mounted in just a few easy steps:

  • Release the tab opposite the suction cup.
  • Press the suction cup against the mounting surface.
  • Push the tab back down while applying pressure to the bar. You should feel some resistance.
Suction grab bars only work on flat surfaces that are not porous. Small tiles won’t work as the suction cup would lap over the grout area. Textured surfaces are also problematic. For safety, a suction cup should only be used as a balance assist, not to leverage ones entire body weight.

Tub rails are another safety device that attach to the rim of a bath tub. Like grab bars, they ensure balance and security when entering or exiting the tub. They attach with a clamp action, and do not require any drilling or other permanent changes.
