Transport Wheelchairs
Transport wheelchairs are lightweight, compact and very affordable when compared to traditional wheelchairs. Regular wheelchairs have two large rear wheels and two smaller wheels in the front. This arrangement allows the user to or to either propel themselves or be pushed by another. Transport chairs have four small wheels, typically 8”, and are designed to be exclusively pushed by someone else. Transport wheelchairs are considerably less bulky than standard wheelchairs and are therefore more portable. They also weigh substantially less, with many models in the 20 lbs. range. Aluminum transport chairs weigh less than their steel counterparts, but are a little more expensive. Swingaway footrests come standard, with some models offering elevating legrests as an option. Standard transport chairs come in 17” and 19” seat widths. Heavy duty bariatric models have wider seats in the 20” – 22” range. A universal shoulder carry bag is available for carrying the transport chair. Storage pouches are also available that hang on the rear of the transport chair. A cup holder is another popular accessory. Most transport wheelchairs come in various colors to satisfy various tastes. The Pollywog from Drive Medical is a hybrid that easily converts from being a standard wheelchair into a transport wheelchair. The large rear wheels are removable. The Fly-Lite, also from Drive, is our lightest transport chair weighing a mere 14.5 lbs. It is important to note that all manufacturers give their product weight specification without the foot riggings. If the foot riggings are to remain in place, figure in a few extra pounds for them when reviewing the specs.
